My Inspiration for the McCall's Quiting Quilt Design Star 2011 Challenge 1

We were challenged to make a quilt using only two blocks, Arrowhead and Shoo-fly.

First of all, I was inspired by my fabric choice.  I chose to use Camelot by Jason Yenter for In the Beginning Fabrics. I just fell in love with the way the fabric was shaded and had light and dark highlights.  The quilt was not intended to be a Christmas quilt, although those are the colors in the line.

So, what to do with the blocks? I spent many hours playing with the design, it took me a week to actually decide on the block and the layout.

First, lets talk about the blocks.  I simply replaced the flying geese units in the Arrowheads Block with the Shoo-fly block, like this.

Simple enough.  So what next? I decided that the lay out would be the tumbling blocks or baby blocks layout. That meant I had to transform my blocks into a 60 degree diamond.

I then decided that I would also use the original Arrowhead block as a block that would be on one side of each 'cube' that was formed.  That block looks like this.

Then, many Y-seams and pin pricked fingers later, my quilt top was complete. A picture of the final quilt is posted to the right of this post.

Here are some of the other layouts and blocks that I came up with, but decided not to use.

I now invite you to head on over the the McCall's Quilting website and vote for your favorite quilt.  And if you choose to do so, vote for mine. And, by all means please leave me a comment there so I know what you think! (You can click on the picture of my quilt at the right of this post, or click here.)

Thanks!

Carl, when do you find out the final results? I gave it my all and may have missed a couple of days, but I voted for yours and encouraged many friends to do the same. I'm anxious to see your new sewing machine!!!!
