Spice Islands Compass Quilt

Here is a photo of the quilt I made in 2009.  The pattern was by Brenda Henning and appeared in Fons & Porter March/April 2007 issue. The quilt was made from Batiks. And yes, I sewed every triangle individually! CRAZY, I know!

The quilting was completed by Janiece Cline

Latest Project "Ripple" (Well, maybe)

So, here is the latest project that I had designed and worked on.  I'm not exactly sure if I am satisfied with the design.  It was supposed to represent a pebble dropped in the water and ripples flowing out.  It's still on my design wall and thinking I want to replace the large dark blue triangular shapes.
I used a McKenna Ryan Fabric that was dyed from selvage to selvage from Aqua to Dark Blue.

Stash Building 101

Quilt shows are a great place to find fabric, books and notions.  The AQS show in Des Moines was no exception. With many vendors, the pickings were awesome.  This is also a time to venture out to the local quilt shops to see what is popular in a different region of the US.  I always spend at least one day traveling to as many quilt shops as possible, my own mini shop hop!

So, what do I look for when building my stash?  I find colors and designers that I love, something unusual or something that I haven't seen in my local shops. Sometimes I have a particular quilt in mind, and sometimes I just stick to one or two color families.

Here are some pictures of my latest stash building fun in Des Moines at the AQS show. (Maybe I did go a little overboard!)

Design Break 2 - One Block Wonder

So I have about 75% of the blocks pieced.  That's when I like to start getting them up on the design wall.  This is also the time when I start sorting the blocks into colors and identifying transition blocks.

Determining the color of the block can be the most difficult part of the process, it was on my first one block quilt.  So, how do I determine the color of a block? I look at the outer 1" - 1 1/2" of the block edge.  I ignore pattern and any additional colors in the center of the block.  Once I have the blocks grouped together, that's when I start playing with pattern and texture within the color "families."  Lets look at some sample blocks.

I consider this first block to be red.  Knowing that the first 1/4" will be in the seam allowance, then next colors are red and black.  I ignore the orange in the center for this step.

I consider this block green.  The outer "border" of this block is contains green and black, the center is blue, again, ignore color and design in the center of the block for now.

This block, even though it can't be seen very well in this photo, is purple.

Well, hope that gives you some insight on how I group the blocks by color.  It took me forever to figure that out on my first One Block Wonder Quilt, that I call "Tropical Explosion."  I wish I still had a piece of the original fabric.  It had huge leaves and hibiscus flowers.

I finally worked out my process on "Oriental Garden."

Here is the original fabric for Oriental Garden pictured above.

Why 3 Dog Design Co?

The answer is quite simple, I have 3 Jack Russell Terriers (and a cat). You can see the little terrors below (LoL).

Design Break

So, I have decided to take a break from my designs and make another "One Block Wonder" quilt.  I love making these quilts, they are quick and easy to piece.  These quilts have taught me about color, that is, not to be afraid of it!  Here is the fabric I have chosen for this quilt.  Let's see how it turns out.
"Stargazer" - by Robert Kauffman

Thank you for visiting my blog

Follow this blog for updates on my quilt designs. I will be posting pictures of my completed quilts. You may also find some works in progress, as I overcome obstacles in their design, how I resolved them, and seek your options.
I have been asked, on numerous occasions, for my patterns, so you may find them here on the blog in the future. Wish me luck as I work with my local quilt shop to see what I can get published.  I have also decided to submit a proposal to AQS for a book (I will keep you posted if my proposal is accepted).
I have also been asked to conduct workshops. I will keep you updated on where and when these workshops will be held.

AQS Des Moines 2010

Back from the AQS Quilt Show in Des Moines.  Had a lot of fun. I learned some new techniques that I hope to apply in my future quilts.  My quilt, "Anemone" was displayed at the show.  I received may good comments and constructive criticism. It's always good to hear other quilters critique your work.
